Multi-Channel Signal Processing
Penguin DJ Set is an interactive DJ performance system designed to explore real-time audio manipulation through three parallel audio channels, each processed with a distinct effect: filtering, distortion, and tremolo modulation. The system uses analog and digital signal processing techniques, allowing for expressive live control and dynamic sound sculpting.
The project demonstrates hands-on integration of electronic components, live mixing, and creative signal design, producing a multi-layered audio experience from a single output.
System Design & Audio Signal Flow
Audio Inputs and Effects:
Input 1: High-pass and low-pass filters
Input 2: Sound distortion
Input 3: Tremolo
Each input is routed through its assigned effect, and the mixing level of each channel is controlled by blue potentiometers acting as live mixers. All three channels are then summed using an inverting summing amplifier, producing a single coherent audio output for performance.
Filters:
The high-pass filter removes low-frequency components, while the low-pass filter removes high-frequency components.
Frequency cutoff is calculated using fc=12πRCf_c = \frac{1}{2 \pi RC}fc=2πRC1, with the corner frequency representing the -3dB point.
The performer can adjust the filter in real-time, allowing dynamic shaping of the spectral content.
Distortion:
Distortion is achieved by overdriving the audio signal and clipping voltages above ±0.7V using diodes.
Gain and clipping thresholds are adjusted for expressive harmonic saturation, creating a range from subtle warmth to aggressive distortion.
Tremolo:
Tremolo modulates the amplitude of a signal over time, producing a rhythmic pulsing effect.
Implemented using a photocell and LED system: light intensity changes the resistance of the photocell, which modulates the amplitude of the audio signal in real time.
Summing Amplifier:
The summing amplifier combines all three processed audio channels into one output.
This design ensures efficient audio routing and allows a single output to carry a complex, layered performance.
Creative & Technical Significance
Real-time interaction between analog audio hardware and live control demonstrates an understanding of signal processing fundamentals.
Combines traditional audio engineering (filters, gain, summing amps) with creative performance techniques.
Offers expressive control over timbre, texture, and rhythmic modulation, suitable for live performance or experimental sound installations.
