Charlotte Ke composed a collection of medicine songs based on the Five-Tone Theory, each corresponding to a different organ’s health.
The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine 《黄帝内经》
Growing up in a long lineage of Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor family, Charlotte has always embraced the idea of integrating physical health with emotional wellness. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the five organs—heart (心), liver (肝), spleen (脾), lungs (肺), and kidneys (肾)—are not only physiological systems but also energetic centers that govern our emotional life. This relationship, known as 五脏对应五情 (the Five Organs and Five Emotions), reflects the deep understanding that the body and mind are one continuous flow of energy.
The heart (心) corresponds to joy (喜). When the heart is balanced, one feels warmth, love, and openness; when over-stimulated, joy turns to restlessness or anxiety.
The liver (肝) corresponds to anger (怒). The liver governs the smooth flow of Qi—our life energy—and when it is blocked, emotions of frustration or irritation arise.
The spleen (脾) corresponds to worry and overthinking (思). It relates to our capacity for nurturing and thought; imbalance can lead to rumination or fatigue.
The lungs (肺) correspond to grief and sadness (忧). Healthy lungs help us release and let go; when Qi stagnates here, sorrow lingers.
The kidneys (肾) correspond to fear (恐). They anchor our willpower and sense of security; imbalance can manifest as anxiety or insecurity.
Ancient Chinese doctors understood that emotional imbalance could disturb organ health, and vice versa. Music, therefore, became a medicine of vibration—a way to restore harmony between emotions and the body’s internal rhythm. Each organ was believed to resonate with a particular tone within the Five-Tone Theory (五音):
Gong (宫) for the spleen
Shang (商) for the lungs
Jiao (角) for the liver
Zhi (徵) for the heart
Yu (羽) for the kidneys
In Project 50, Charlotte draws upon this ancient system to bridge the past and present. Her collection of medicine songs transforms these tonal relationships into contemporary compositions, where each frequency and melodic gesture invites listeners to reconnect with their inner organs—balancing emotion, releasing tension, and finding tranquility through sound.
